What is the difference?
A portable cabin is built as a room or building from a frame, floor, walls and roof. A container office starts with a shipping-container shell that is adapted for occupation. Both still need a defined layout, insulation, ventilation, electrical installation and suitable support at the site.
The term portable office describes the use, not one construction method. Ask whether an offer is for a purpose-built cabin, a converted container, or connected modules before comparing prices.
Compare the layout you can actually use
A purpose-built cabin can be specified around the room widths, circulation and service zones you need. A container starts from its shell dimensions, and insulation and interior linings reduce the clear internal space.
Measure desk layouts, door swings and routes to exits on the finished drawing. Joining units or cutting large openings should be engineered, not treated as a simple cosmetic alteration.
Comfort and safety depend on the specification
Neither label guarantees a comfortable office in the UAE. Compare the roof and wall build-up, air-conditioning load, shading, glazing, ventilation and sealing. Ask how condensation and water ingress are addressed.
A steel outer shell is not a fire-rating certificate. Confirm the required performance of the complete assembly, doors and penetrations with the project consultant or relevant authority. The permitted use and site conditions matter as much as the supplier's product description.
Delivery and future moves
Check the route, lifting space, ground preparation and access for the selected unit before ordering. A future relocation also needs disconnection, transport, lifting and recommissioning; do not treat those costs as zero because the unit is called portable.
For a converted container, ask about the shell's condition and any structural modifications. For a cabin, ask about its lifting details and the intended relocation method. Inspect both before accepting a used unit.
A practical choice
- Start with a cabin quotation when the priority is a room layout or width tailored to the people using it.
- Compare a container conversion when the container format suits the site, intended appearance and fit-out.
- For either option, compare drawings, installed scope, supporting documents and total cost.
- If speed is important, compare actual available stock with fabrication lead time rather than assuming one type is always faster.
